Tirupati Balaji Temple History and Story
The stories our grandparents told us about the Lord of Seven Hills.
Why the Lord stays on the seven hills
Our grandfather told us the story of Srinivasa and Padmavathi every time we went up the ghat road. He said the Lord is still repaying a loan to Kubera, and that is why devotees offer to the hundi. As children we believed every word, and in a way we still do.
Below are the main legends and the history of the temple, simply told. For a visit, see our first visit plan.
Quick answer: Tirupati temple history goes back more than a thousand years. No single person built it: legend says King Thondaiman built the first shrine, and Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara rulers expanded it. The story of Tirupati Balaji tells how Srinivasa married Padmavathi with a loan from Kubera.
Why the Lord took a loan from Kubera
Legend says Lord Vishnu came to earth as Srinivasa and wished to marry Padmavathi, daughter of King Akasa Raja. To arrange a grand wedding he borrowed a huge sum from Kubera, the god of wealth.
Srinivasa promised to repay it till the end of Kali Yuga. Devotees believe their offerings in the hundi help the Lord repay this loan, which is why giving at Tirumala feels so personal to many families.
Our grandfather used to say that whatever we give is never too small, because the Lord counts the love and not the amount. Even today, the hundi at Tirumala receives offerings from millions of devotees every year.
